I used Unity to create a speech recognition system that I successfully tested on an Android phone. On Pico, I found that it requires the Google App to be installed in order to use the voice recognition.

Speech recognition can be done in two ways. The first one call up the Google microphone. The second one, the voice is received programmatically. Calling the Google microphone in VR is a bad idea because it causes the VR to close and the microphone to appear. However, it works perfectly for speech recognition. Receive voice programmatically, on the other hand, always returns an error, and I'm not sure why. It only occurs in Pico and not on an Android phone.

You can try it out by installing it on your phone and Pico.
Speech Recognition App

  1. Do I need to install anything else besides the Google App in order for it to work?
  2. If there is no way fix, is there a way to keep the Google microphone in VR?

Sorry to tell you our system does not support the use of Google Speech Recognition. But you can try to use third-party Speech Recognition, such as: XunFei.
